New Hope is currently undertaking the rehabilitation of an area of historical mining disturbance in the Ipswich suburb of Chuwar. The site was operational in the early 1980’s when two separate open cut pits were mined for coal. The rehabilitation plan entails backfilling the existing residual voids to levels similar to the pre-mine topography using material from the adjoining spoil dumps.
The rehabilitation project is expected to take approximately 2 years.
As part of the detailed rehabilitation planning process Federal Government approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act (1999) was obtained in June 2013.
